The ability for the police to provide protection to the private sector on private property varies from one jurisdiction to another. It also varies with the kind of criminal activity taking place and whether that activity constitutes a felony or a misdemeanor.

Smaller jurisdictions with low crime rates generally will find the police more willing to accommodate private business. Larger jurisdictions, because of high crime rates, generally place more demands on the police, that they little time for anything else.

The key is to contact the local police department before something goes wrong. Ask for the Crime Prevention Officer. Sit down with police officials and get a clear understanding as to what their limits are.

Businesses that operate at night often find it beneficial to make coffee and refreshments available to police officers as a way to encourage them to stop by. There is no better security than having a police cruiser in your parking lot. Most police jurisdictions want to be involved within limits. You need to find out where those limits begin and where they end.

Open and active communication with local police will usually pay significant dividends.
